The fundamental benefits of PON technology are flexibility, reliability and simplicity. It eliminates active network components, such as amplifiers, switches or regenerators from field locations. With PON architecture, all active components are placed at the ends of the fiber and nothing, other than small passive optical splitters, are placed in the field. These splitters fit into standard splice enclosures and can be conveniently installed with the cable. No further maintenance is required. Eliminated are expensive controlled environmental vaults (CEVs), air conditioning requirements, large pedestals, commercial powering, as well as time consuming technician dispatches.
Secondly, PON technology employs bi-directional communications over a single fiber strand. This technology reduces the amount of fiber needed by more than half, which benefits the operator (as compared to point-to-point). For operators with exhausted fiber capacity, PON enables the reclamation of capacity through better fiber utilization. This results in few fibers needed to support large numbers of subscribers. This single strand of fiber can feed as many as thirty-two service drops and multiple customer locations.
Unlike first generation ATM-based access equipment, Alloptic has developed a disruptive Gigabit Ethernet passive optical network (GEPON) technology, which provides a low cost method of deploying optical access lines between a service provider's central office and a user's site.
